Internships
Our Goals for You
Our goal for all the programs is to prepare you for success in either a progressive general practice or a residency program. We help you to develop your medical experience, your client skills, and your management abilities. We welcome you to visit our practices to meet the doctors, staff members and present interns to experience for yourself all NYC Veterinary Specialists or Florida Veterinary Specialists has to offer as well as the culture we have created within our hospitals. If you cannot visit, please feel free to contact us directly to discuss any one of the programs, learn more about our hospitals and answer any questions you may have.
How to Apply
Should you be interested in applying for one of our programs, please forward the VIRMP application form, your cover letter of intent, a copy of your transcripts and three letters of recommendation. Intern Applicants must be eligible for licensure in Florida or New York before June, 2010. Every applicant will be evaluated based upon their intentions, academic performance, past and current activities, and their recommendations. Weight is given to enthusiastic, energetic individuals who enjoy working with clients and have committed themselves to an intern or resident experience.
Florida
Florida Veterinary Specialists and Cancer Treatment Center (FVS) is a referral and 24-hour emergency hospital, located in Tampa, Florida with satellite hospitals in neighboring communities. FVS will be welcoming their 15th intern class in June of 2010 and also offers focused second year internships, and residency programs in Avian & Exotic Medicine, Cardiology, Emergency & Critical Care, Internal Medicine, and Surgery.
Small Animal Rotating Medicine and Surgery Internship

Description: This program allows 10 interns that spend one year at our practice and rotate through Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Neurology, Surgery, and Emergency Medicine in two, three or four week blocks. Elective rotations are in Avian/Exotics, Oncology, Dermatology, Behavior, Cardiology, Radiology, and Ophthalmology. This internship has been offered since 1996 and most appropriate for those individuals most likely to pursue a residency after the program. This program is offered through the Match Program.
North Bay Animal Hospital Joint Internship

Description: This program is offered in conjunction with North Bay Animal Hospital, a progressive general practice in Tampa. Two interns spend six months at Florida Veterinary Specialists and six months at North Bay in alternating rotations. These interns have the same opportunities, and we have the same expectations of the interns participating in this program as in the programs described above. This internship is most appropriate for those that will most likely want to pursue a residency or go directly to general practice after completing the internship. This program is offered through the Match Program.
Oncology Internship

Description: The Oncology intern works exclusively with our two Oncologists. This program is offered in the match with the prerequisite that the intern must have completed Small Animal Internship prior to the start of our program. Our hospital was the first in the country to offer an Oncology Intern program and these former interns have all placed in an Oncology residency programs following the completion of the internship. The candidate must have the goal of pursuing a residency position in Oncology.
New York
NYC Veterinary Specialists and Cancer Treatment Center (NYCVS) is a referral and 24-hour emergency hospital, located in the heart of Manhattan, with a second location in Queens. If you are exploring post-graduate opportunities, we hope you will consider NYC Veterinary Specialists as a possible facility for an internship experience. We will be welcoming our 5th intern class in the summer of 2010. Our intern program is an excellent combination of academic and practical clinical experience to help you realize your future goals, whether those goals are to work in a progressive general practice upon completion of the internship or to begin a residency program to specialize.
