‘Bunny Buggy’ Helps Semi-Paralyzed Rabbit Walk Again

TAMPA, Fla. – A semi-paralyzed rabbit has been given the gift of walking again after a doctor from BluePearl Veterinary Partners and her husband devised a contraption to assist the rabbit.

The rabbit, named Charlie, is about 8 years old and he has developed a chronic and progressive neck injury that prevents him from using his front legs.

Dr. Julia Shakeri, an avian and exotic medicine resident at BluePearl Veterinary Partners specialty and emergency hospital in Tampa, and her husband, Gregg Raffa, a mechanical engineer with Connecticut Plastics, constructed the mobile carrier Monday evening.

The carrier is already allowing Charlie some mobility and has made eating and drinking easier.

Shakeri hopes that once Charlie becomes acclimated to the carrier, he will be able to move around even more successfully.

Additionally, Shakeri and Raffa plan to refine the mobile carrier and are calling this one, “phase one.”

BluePearl Veterinary Partners in Tampa is one of nine recognized veterinary trauma centers in the nation.
