Dog survives being hit by train, undergoes surgery at BluePearl

DSC_0249BLAINE, Minn. – A dog that was hit by a train Sunday morning underwent surgery at BluePearl Veterinary Partners referral medicine hospital in Blaine Monday.

The 1-year-old lab mix, named Chase, got loose from his parent, Mark Rogers, when they were out for a walk Sunday. Chase managed to get away from Rogers, and was hit by a train and pinned underneath it on the tracks.

Once that train passed, Rogers was able to free Chase before another approaching train was able to hit Chase.

During the incident, Chase suffered a severed right rear foot, a fractured hip and skin near his groin was removed.

Mark and his wife, Dawn, rushed Chase to Affiliated Emergency Veterinary Services in Blaine where Chase was stabilized and given pain medication. AEVS referred Chase to BluePearl Veterinary Partners where he underwent surgery on Monday and will undergo more surgery on Tuesday.

Dr. Andrew Jackson, a board-certified veterinary surgeon, performed surgery on Chase to repair the wounds Monday.Chase 1

“Today’s surgery went well, and if he’s stable enough, tomorrow we’re planning on fixing the hip fracture,” said Jackson. “While he has a long road to recovery and some battles ahead, I’m optimistic that once he’s done healing, he’ll have a good quality of life.”

Frankie’s Friends, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, has set up a page to assist with the cost of Chase’s care. Anyone interested in donating to Chase’s care should visit 2
