Tampa FL, Monday, July 12, 2010 – Through a recent merger with Georgia Veterinary Specialists (GVS) and Michigan Veterinary Specialists (MVS), BluePearl Veterinary Partners now encompasses 12 veterinary specialty, referral, and emergency facilities in seven states. The partnership currently employs approximately 200 veterinarians and 500 technicians and support staff.
“I’m excited our family of hospitals is growing. Together with GVS and MVS, we are continuing to broaden our expertise in high-quality specialty, referral and emergency medicine, which ultimately strengthens our overall practices and benefits pets, their families, and our referring veterinarians,” said Neil Shaw, DVM, DACVIM, chief medical officer of BluePearl Veterinary Partners. “From great patient care to exceptional continuing education for the veterinary community, GVS and MVS were already in alignment with the values and service that BluePearl promotes. I am looking forward to working with the leadership and staff in all BluePearl hospitals to identify and implement best clinical and veterinary business practices that will better the field of veterinary medicine.”
Although some BluePearl hospitals are new to their communities, many of the regional hospitals, such as GVS and MVS, have been operating under the same leadership in their communities for more than a decade. Founded in 1995 and located in the center of Metro Atlanta, GVS is the largest private specialty referral hospital and emergency center in the state, employing approximately 150 veterinarians, technicians and support staff. The facility has more than 10,000 annual patient visits.
“This partnership represents a unique opportunity for us at GVS to collaborate with some of the veterinary industry’s best and brightest around the country. Because BluePearl is owned and operated by veterinarians and veterinary industry professionals, we share a focused commitment to improving outcomes for pets,” said Mark Dorfman, DVM, DACVIM, medical director of GVS. “Another unique strength of BluePearl is the operating structure. Each hospital retains and operates with existing local leadership enabling the team, which knows its patients, pet-owning community and referring veterinarians best, to continue to provide quality medical care efficiently and effectively,” he added.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, Michigan Veterinary Specialists has three world-class, technologically advanced hospitals that provide diagnostics and treatments that help more than 15,000 patients each year. The staff of 120 doctors, technicians and support staff work hand-in-hand with general practice veterinarians throughout the Midwest. Dan Lorimer, DVM, DACVO, founder and hospital director of MVS, explained, “The focus of each BluePearl hospital is to provide state-of-the-art specialty medicine. BluePearl hospitals operate on a referral-basis with a culture of collegiality and professional advancement. This mirrors the culture and passion of MVS and GVS, and is the primary reason both facilities were interested in merging with BluePearl.” He continued, “With the addition of GVS and MVS, BluePearl now offers almost every recognized small-animal clinical specialty in North America. Most BluePearl hospitals host year-long veterinary internships and a few offer three-year residency programs in avian medicine, cardiology, critical care, internal medicine, ophthalmology, and surgery. We also enjoy strong working relationships with the veterinary community and the regional veterinary schools in the locations that we operate.”
BluePearl Veterinary Partners was founded by veterinarian Neil Shaw, his brother Darryl Shaw, who is the chief executive officer, and veterinarian Jeff Dennis. The organization was formed in 2008 with the merger of Florida Veterinary Specialists with locations in Tampa, Brandon and Clearwater, Florida; Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Center of Kansas City located in Overland Park, Kansas; and NYC Veterinary Specialists with locations in Manhattan and Queens. Since that time, BluePearl Veterinary Partners opened BluePearl Veterinary Partners referral practice in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota and BluePearl Veterinary Partners specialty and emergency hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. With the addition of GVS and MVS, BluePearl Veterinary Partners now has more than 150 veterinarians working throughout the organization providing specialty and emergency medicine for pets.
