EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. – A Minnesota dog with an extraordinary underbite is scheduled to undergo surgery Wednesday morning at BluePearl Veterinary Partners in Eden Prairie after the Internet rallied to his support.
The 7-month-old pure-bred Vizsla named Oliver, or “Ollie” for short, was apparently injured by another dog during his first few weeks of life, which caused the growth plates to function abnormally and his lower jaw to grow faster than his upper jaw.
“The surgery won’t necessarily be to correct the underbite, but rather to assist with his current breathing issues and to also remove the impacted teeth up top, which would cause a serious problem later down the road,” said Dr. Donnell Hansen, a board-certified veterinary dentist and oral surgeon.
Kathy and Matt Hartmann got Ollie when he was eight weeks old, after losing one of their other Vizslas last summer.
The surgery was estimated to cost around $3,500 to $4,000 dollars. Within 10 days of setting up a gofundme page, the cost of the surgery had been covered.
“We’re extremely grateful to the Vizsla community and everyone else who gave to help with the costs of this procedure,” said Kathy Hartmann. “When you get a new puppy, this is the last thing you think you will have to deal with.”
If everything goes well with surgery, Oliver could be home as soon as Wednesday evening or no later than Thursday morning.
