NEW YORK – Charlie, the shepherd mix who was rescued from a snowy park on a freezing night by concerned neighbors, is receiving treatment at BluePearl Veterinary Partners and showing some signs of improvement.

Dr. Cassandra Williams, a board-certified veterinary neurologist at BluePearl who is overseeing Charlie’s care, said Charlie is doing better today but she is still waiting for the results of a spinal tap. His blood is also being screened for infectious diseases.

Charlie is being held in isolation at BluePearl as a precaution because he has no record of vaccinations.

Charlie was lethargic, dull and reluctant to move when he was brought to the BluePearl Veterinary Partners specialty and emergency hospital in Manhattan Monday. According to neighbors, the dog, who is called Ricky by some residents, has been living between Highbridge Park and Inwood Hill Park for about the last 10 years.

He has eluded attempts to be captured in the past, but with temperatures hovering around zero, a group of concerned neighbors was able to usher him into a van Sunday night so that he could receive veterinary care, according to news reports.

Neighborhood resident Tina Ilmet is assuming responsibility for Charlie’s care. She said he has become a local institution.

“Everybody knows him, but he’s a feral dog,” Ilmet said. “If you tried to approach him, he’d run away. I’ve been working with him for quite a while, so he finally got to the point where he would recognize me and wag his tail.”

The neighbors have set up a GoFundMe site to raise money for Charlie’s care. Those interested in donating can click here.
