Water Main Break Causes Need for Pet Precautions

TAMPA, Fla. – BluePearl Veterinary Partners recommends pet owners take the same precautions for their pets as they would for themselves after a water main broke here Friday.

According to a press release issued by the City of Tampa, a ruptured transmission main on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard between Amberly Drive and Tampa Palms Boulevard is affecting water service to customers in north Tampa.

A precautionary boil water notice is expected to be issued by the Tampa Water Department to affected areas. As a result of this, BluePearl Veterinary Partners recommends the same precautions given to humans be followed for pets to prevent potential sickness.

“Various health issues can be caused by consuming unsafe water,” said Tony Ishak, DVM, DACVIM, a board-certified specialist in veterinary internal medicine at BluePearl. “If your pet is exhibiting symptoms associated with gastrointestinal upset, such as diarrhea, vomiting or lethargy, you should contact your family veterinarian as soon as possible, or if it is after hours, we would be glad to help at one of our locations.”

Additional symptoms of gastrointestinal infections include bloating, loss of appetite and low-grade fever.
