BOSTON – The grand prize winner of BluePearl Veterinary Partners’ second annual BluePearl Beastly Costume Contest has decided to donate her prize to a Boston-based cat rescue organization.

Barbara Fyfe, of Everett, Massachusetts, won the event with a picture of Selani, a 5-year-old Savannah breed cat. Selani is pictured in leather battle armor, which Fyfe’s husband had made for her. The photo is both ironic and symbolic because Selani had been fighting a battle with lymphoma. On the evening Fyfe entered Selani’s picture into the contest, Selani lost her battle with lymphoma.

“We posted a few pictures to Facebook thinking our friends would get a kick out of it,” said Fyfe. “A friend of ours then posted it onto Reddit and to our surprise, it started getting reposted and shared.”

The Fyfe’s have decided to donate the grand prize, a free year of pet food from Hill’s Pet Nutrition, to the Woburn Feral Cat Coalition.

“We miss her so much,” Fyfe said. “But it’s been wonderful to know that so many people will remember her, and that she was able to make so many others smile.”

The third place prize goes to April Martinez of Omaha, Nebraska. Martinez won a $100 gift certificate to the Posh Puppy Boutique. In the photo Martinez submitted, her 5-year-old Chihuahua-mix named Zeus-zoo is dressed up like Edward Scissorhands.

The contest ran from Oct. 1 through Oct. 27. In all, more than 177 photos were entered into the contest. There were 1,545 likes, which means that BluePearl will be donating more than $1,545 to Frankie’s Friends charitable pet foundation.
