Pilot Study of a New Treatment for Dogs with Chronic Inflammatory Enteropathy.

Study details

This study will evaluate the efficacy and safety of a new treatment versus placebo for chronic inflammatory enteropathy (previously known as inflammatory bowel disease) in dogs.

Inclusion criteria

The owner consents to participate in the study and all study procedures including blood, urine, and fecal tests, abdominal x-rays, and sedation for endoscopy and biopsies of the intestinal tract, if needed.

The dog:

  • Has had chronic, intermittent vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, or weight loss for at least three weeks
  • Is manageable and cooperative with study procedures
  • Is expected to live at leave six months in the opinion of the study veterinarian

Additional inclusion/exclusion criteria, including dietary and medication requirements, will be evaluated at the start of the study during the screening visit.

Exclusion criteria

The dog:

  • Has a history of pancreatitis in the last six months
  • Has a suspicion of or diagnosed exocrine pancreatic insufficiency
  • Has other serious illness such as liver or kidney disease, cancer, diabetes, Cushing’s disease, Addison’s disease, or any other illness that might interfere with study participation
  • Has had surgery of the stomach or intestines in the last 30 days or any other surgery in the last six months
  • Has a serious infection
  • Has been in another clinical trial in the last 30 days

Covered costs

  • All study-related costs including exams, diagnostics and procedures are covered by the study sponsor
  • A $100 incentive will be added to client's BluePearl account

Duration of study

  • Six visits over 15 weeks
