Our services.
BluePearl is a specialty and emergency hospital with a mission to provide expert, collaborative, compassionate care to sick and injured pets. We work in partnership with primary care veterinarians who refer pets who need specialized diagnostics, treatments or procedures much as a doctor would refer you or a family member to a specialist to receive treatment for a specific illness or injury.
Our goal is to provide the highest quality veterinary care possible by acting as an extension of your primary veterinarian. Our team of board-certified specialists communicate with you and your veterinarian every step of the way from diagnosis to treatment to aftercare.
Types of specialties & services.
Our Durham hospital offers these specialties and services provided by skilled, compassionate and dedicated professionals.

Emergency Medicine
Our emergency team sees a wide variety of medical problems ranging from minor infections to life-threatening trauma. Among the more common problems treated by our emergency doctors are vomiting/diarrhea, urethral obstruction, toxic ingestion/exposure, trauma, respiratory distress, snakebites, heatstroke and end-of-life care.
As with human emergency rooms, the most life-threatening cases are triaged first. Our veterinary team will evaluate patients when they arrive to collect vital signs prior to an examination by one of our emergency doctors. There may be times when more stable patients may need to wait so critical patients can be stabilized. Please know that every patient is important to us. We will take all the necessary steps to ensure all patients receive the care they need.

Diagnostic Imaging
Using advanced imaging modalities and services, our radiology department’s goal is to provide high-quality diagnostic images and interactive image interpretation that make a difference in patient care and outcomes, and to foster this ideal within the veterinary community.

Internal Medicine
Our board-certified internists and their teams have extensive experience dealing with complex and challenging cases involving the endocrine, gastrointestinal, urinary and hematologic systems. Typically, pets are referred to our internal medicine services with problems that are hard to define and involve multiple body systems. GI disease, respiratory diseases, complicated endocrine diseases as well as diseases of the liver, kidneys and lower urinary tract are among the most prevalent cases seen by our internists.

Oncology
Cancer in pets can occur in many different forms, just as it can with humans. Although humans and animals are biologically similar, there is a difference in the goals of the treatment of cancer. For pets, while remission is often sought, the overriding goal of treatment is to preserve quality of life at the highest possible level. Our oncologists treat many types of cancer using a variety of treatments and procedures to give cats, dogs and other small pets the happiest, healthiest life possible.
