When Norm arrived at BluePearl Pet Hospital, his owner, Ashley, was terrified. Just hours earlier, the Doberman had been at home when a devastating accident changed everything in an instant.

At first, it seemed like Norm may have only injured his front leg after being bumped in the driveway. But as the evening went on, his condition worsened. He began coughing up blood, and Ashley knew something was very wrong.

She and her family rushed him to BluePearl St. Cloud for emergency care, frightened not only by what they were seeing, but by how quickly their strong, energetic dog had declined. By the time Norm arrived, he could no longer walk on his own and had to be carried inside.

Dr. Danielle Renstrom and the emergency team moved quickly to assess him. Bloodwork, imaging and an emergency ultrasound revealed the seriousness of his injuries. Norm had suffered a pneumothorax, air trapped around the lungs that made it difficult for him to breathe, along with bruised lungs caused by the trauma. He needed around-the-clock critical care.

For Ashley, everything felt like a blur.

"One moment he was by our side, and the next we were rushing him to BluePearl, terrified of what we might lose," she shared later.

Norm was transferred seamlessly to BluePearl Golden Valley, where Dr. Colette Manley and the emergency team continued his care. Additional diagnostics revealed multiple fractured ribs and worsening trauma to his lungs. As his pneumothorax progressed, the team placed a chest tube and started oxygen therapy to help stabilize him.

Over the next three days, Norm remained under the care of BluePearl’s emergency and critical care teams, including Dr. Mallory Salcedo and Dr. Austin Luskin. Every moment mattered. Ashley and her family waited anxiously for updates, hoping for signs of improvement while navigating one of the most frightening experiences they had ever faced.

But alongside the advanced medical care, something else stood out to Ashley: The compassion she felt from every person she encountered.

"From the moment we arrived, we were met with calm urgency, compassion, and a level of professionalism that immediately reassured us we were in the right place," she said.

She described how every team member, from the front desk staff to the technicians and veterinarians, took time to explain what was happening, answer questions and guide the family through difficult decisions. Even during the busiest moments, Norm never felt like "just another patient."

"It never felt routine to them," Ashley said. "It felt deeply personal."

As someone who works in human emergency medicine herself, Ashley saw something especially meaningful in the way the BluePearl team cared for both Norm and her family.

"What stood out to me at BluePearl was not only their clinical excellence, but the way they delivered it, with empathy, communication and respect," she shared.

Day by day, Norm grew stronger. His breathing improved. The chest tube was eventually removed, and after several days of intensive monitoring and treatment, he was finally ready to go home.

Today, Norm is back where he belongs: At home with Ashley and her family, healed and doing wonderfully.

For Ashley, gratitude barely feels big enough to describe what the BluePearl team gave them.

"Thank you for giving our dog a second chance," she said, "and for reminding us what truly great care looks like."
