Dansby, a nine-year-old Australian shepherd mix, has always been full of life, bringing both energy and comfort to his family every day. When he suddenly began acting disoriented and unsteady, they knew something was wrong. What started as subtle changes quickly became much more serious when Dansby began having seizures.

His family rushed him to BluePearl Pet Hospital in Johns Creek, searching for answers and urgent care. By the time he arrived, Dansby was in critical condition. He was unable to stand, not fully aware of his surroundings, and experiencing a life-threatening condition known as status epilepticus.

A race against time.

From the moment he arrived, the emergency team began working to stabilize him and control the seizures. Given the severity and complexity of his condition, multiple specialists were brought in to provide their expertise. The critical care teams from BluePearl Sandy Springs and Westside helped by consulting with the Johns Creek emergency team. Together, they made sure his medications were managed while monitoring him closely in the ICU. The neurology team helped guide diagnostic and treatment decisions as his condition evolved.

Despite aggressive treatment, Dansby was still in a tough spot. His seizures were difficult to control, and he developed complications, including pneumonia. His care team ran through possible causes, including a suspected toxin exposure, while continuing to adjust his treatment based on how he responded.

For several days, Dansby required intensive, around-the-clock care. His team continuously reassessed his condition, making real-time decisions to support his brain function, breathing, and overall stability. During this time, his family stayed closely connected with his care team, receiving updates and guidance as everyone worked toward the same goal: helping Dansby recover and get back to his family, happy and healthy.

After several days in the ICU, Dansby began to show signs of improvement. His seizures came under control, and his awareness gradually returned. As his condition stabilized, his care team carefully reduced his medications and supportive therapies while continuing to monitor his progress.

In the days that followed, Dansby’s spark slowly began to return as he grew stronger. He no longer needed oxygen support, began eating again, and slowly regained coordination and awareness. With each step forward, it became clearer that he was on the path to recovery.

Home again.

After more than a week in the hospital, Dansby was finally able to return home with his family. He was discharged without ongoing seizures and continued to improve in the comfort of his home, surrounded by those who loved him most. His family reports that his strength, coordination, and personality have continued to return, bringing a deep sense of relief and gratitude after such a frightening experience.

Dansby’s story shows just how quickly neurologic emergencies can develop and how complex they can be to diagnose and treat. It also highlights the importance of rapid intervention, continuous monitoring, and collaboration across veterinary specialties.
