Blood Bank

In recent years, transfusion medicine has become more prevalent in veterinary care. National animal blood banks do supply blood products, but are often backordered and out of product. We created our blood bank in 2004 to help fill this need.

We are encouraging those who would like their cats and dogs to help save the lives of other pets to sign up to become donors. Donations will assist animals suffering from trauma, toxin ingestion, auto-immune diseases and heat stroke, as well as those who are preparing for or recovering from surgery. Veterinarians are welcome to contact us to inquire about the availability of blood products for their patients.

There are medical benefits for donor dogs and cats as well. At no cost to their owner, pets will receive:

  • Exam by one of our clinicians
  • Complete blood work
  • Heartworm test
  • Thyroid test for cats
  • Infectious disease testing
  • Blood typing
  • Plenty of hugs and kisses

In addition, your donor pet or another pet in your household can receive one free blood product after six successful donations.

Requirements for blood donors:

  • Good temperament and health
  • Between 1-6 years old
  • No history of transfusions
  • Minimum body weight of 55 pounds (25 kg)
  • Up to date on vaccines

  • Between 1-6 years old
  • Minimum body weight of 10 pounds (4.5 kg)
  • No history of transfusions
  • Donor and feline housemates must be indoors only
  • Up to date on vaccines
