Critical Care

The PVSEC emergency department offers advanced medical care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Our department is staffed around the clock by a team of critical care veterinarians and technicians. Our critical care team manages the most life-threatening and urgent care cases in our Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

We understand that trauma or serious illness can happen at any time, so walk-ins are welcome through our emergency department. From the moment you walk through the door, our team of experienced veterinarians provide you and your pet with high quality care. Our critical care clinicians treat the most urgent cases in veterinary medicine, and our facility is equipped with life-saving technology. Hospital features include:

  • ICU – with 24/7 monitoring by a team of emergency and critical care veterinarians and technicians

  • Advanced monitoring including telemetry, direct blood pressure and arterial blood gas

  • Transfusion medicine – supplied by an on-site blood bank for fast access

  • Advanced fluid therapy and pain management – to ensure your pet is as comfortable as possible

  • High flow oxygen and mechanical ventilation – to treat advanced pulmonary disease

  • Peritoneal dialysis – to treat kidney disease and kidney failure

  • Cardiovascular support

  • Oxygen support

  • Nutritional support

  • Monitoring of post-operative and post-traumatic patients

Please be mindful that, like human emergency rooms, PVESC’s emergency department triages the most acute, life-threatening cases first. During extreme busy periods, there may be a wait for steady patients while critical patients are stabilized. Should your pet require a specialty evaluation, we have immediate access to a multitude of board-certified veterinarian specialists within our facility. Other specialties offered at PVESC include internal medicine, surgery, oncology, dentistry and more.
